“Books are good at telling us things. Lectures are good at telling us things. You are not making a book or a lecture. You are making a game. Games are good at showing us things.” – Jesse Schell, game designer.

Together we will explore the use of video games as media to create a complex, immersive environment to provoke thought and encourage discussion. Students will play, critique and comment on video games designed to entertain, educate and challenge our perspective as global citizens.

Cary Staples is a designer. period. She is also an educator, a creative problem solver, a math geek and a game developer. With 25 years of professional design experience, her newest project is The App Farm. The App Farm endeavors to frame problems so that cross-functional teams of undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty participants come together, each from a specific area of strength, to collaborate and create innovative learning landscapes and experiences. The goal of each project is that the developer/participants learn as much about the subject matter as the intended audience/users. They hope to launch their first app, Bonne Chance, in Fall 2017. http://www.playbonnechance.com
