Graduate Teaching Assistant for First-Year Studies
- Positive attitude and sincere desire to help students;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including attention to detail and accuracy, effective email communication, phone, and group presentation skills;
- Classroom experience teaching or other close work with first-year students desired; experience with curriculum design and assessment preferred;
- Ability to work both independently as well as with supervisors, co-workers, students, and the university community;
- Undergraduate/Graduate experience in a leadership role preferred.
- Professional demeanor, including appropriate attire for a leadership position with significant student contact, as well as maturity to function as a staff member in a university office;
- Flexibility in scheduling of work hours (must be available some evening hours, and an occasional weekend);
- Proficiency with MS Office applications (esp. Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Blackboard;
Responsibilities and Tasks:
Exact responsibilities and tasks will be based on the selected candidate’s strengths and development needs, but will include some of the following:
LIFE OF THE MIND/FIRST-YEAR STUDIES 100 (Summer – Fall)
- Assist in the implementation and management of the online required course FYS 100;
- Support coordination and implementation of the Life of the Mind common reading program, assisting with the author campus visit, book selection Advisory Board, and annual Discussion Leader Seminar planning and logistics;
- Maintain FYS 100 email account and assist with communication with students;
FIRST-YEAR STUDIES 101 (Fall – Spring)
- Assist in the recruitment of undergraduate Peer Mentor leaders (additional support provided by Peer Mentor Coordinators – undergraduate leaders).
- Work collaboratively with FYS staff to prepare materials for 101 (handbook revisions, recruitment materials, Annual Conference materials)
- Assist coordination and logistics of annual Instructors Conference
VOLUNTEER BRIDGE PROGRAM (Summer – Spring)
- Assist in the implementation of the Bridge Program, including recruitment, orientation, programming, academic coaching, assessment, etc.

FUNCTION AS STAFF MEMBER OF FIRST-YEAR STUDIES:
- Market First-Year Studies to students, parents, and other constituencies at orientation, campus browse sessions, web and physical publications;
- Assist in the case management of the Early Alert system;
- Attend weekly staff meetings and any related training or staff development activities;
- Assist with the implementation, coordination, and assessment of other First-Year Studies programs as needed (e.g. including but not limited to learning communities, staff development, research and benchmark reporting).
- Other duties as assigned. We are a growing office and new responsibilities are likely to emerge in the coming year.

- Annual stipend of $13,000 (distributed over 12 months)

- Vacation days for all employee holidays + two additional weeks of student holidays
- This is a 12-month Graduate Teaching Assistant position, beginning on August 1, 2014 and ending on June 1st, 2015 (at will). Preference may be given to individuals available to work the preceding summer (May-July 2014).
- In being a 50% appointment, you may not hold an additional appointment for the duration of your assistantship with First-Year Studies.
