FYS 100: The Volunteer Connection

Welcome to your first class at the University of Tennessee, First-Year Studies 100. FYS 100 is a required online course designed to introduce you to academic life at the University of Tennessee. To help your transition to the Volunteer community, you will become acquainted with important tools and campus resources, and develop an awareness of strategies that will help you succeed in college life and beyond.

All first-year students are enrolled in and required to complete this course as a part of their official transcript.

FYS 100 will be conducted through the online learning platform, Canvas. There are two ways to access Canvas:

  • Log in to your myUTK account by visiting At the bottom of the page, under “UTK Student Academic Links” select “Access Online@UT.” This will bring you directly to the Canvas site.
  • In the address bar of your internet browser, go to Log in to Canvas by using your netID (your UTK email address without and your password.

Once you are on Canvas, the course will appear on your Dashboard. Select “FYS 100” to access our site. If you are having trouble with Canvas, you will need to contact the Office of Information Technology (OIT) HelpDesk. They can be reached at (865)-974-9900 or request assistance at Please make sure to have your netID ready.

Course Dates:

January 8 – February 26, 2020; this course is considered a first-term course. All modules and quizzes in this course must be completed by 11:59pm on February 26, 2020.
