Are you interested in supporting UT’s first-year students? First-Year Studies provides a number of teaching and leadership opportunities for interested members of the Volunteer community. From undergraduates to graduates, staff to faculty members, we are proud to have such an active and involved community of mentors for our first-year students.

Teaching FYS 101: The UT Experience

FYS 101 equips students with the skills needed to aim for graduation and success in their field of choice. It is a one-credit course specifically designed to assist with personal and academic adjustment to college life. FYS 101 offers opportunities to meet other freshmen and establish support groups with peers, staff, and faculty. In addition, students develop skills to thrive in the classroom and in life beyond the classroom.

Application Schedule:

  • February 1st – Deadline for fall semester seminars
  • Only two spring seminars are offered. Experienced instructors are encouraged to inquire.

Who can teach: UT Faculty and Staff with an earned Master’s degree

Teaching FYS 129: Special Topics

FYS 129 is a one-credit, pass/no-credit course that invites students to engage in a selected topic with a faculty member at UT. These seminars have an enrollment maximum of eighteen students, so students and instructors will have a lot of interaction. Students are encouraged to learn, explore, and exchange ideas with first-year students who have similar interests.

Proposal Schedule:

  • Feb 1st – Deadline for fall semester seminars
  • September 1st – Deadline for spring semester seminars
